A century of blinking

The blink comparator was invented in 1904 by physicist Carl Pulfrich at Carl Zeiss AG, and it became one of astronomy’s most important tools. Its most famous moment came on February 18, 1930, when 22-year-old Clyde Tombaugh was blinking between two photographic plates of the night sky and a single point of light jumped — that was Pluto.
